What should a covering letter say ?
The "You/Me/Us" technique is quite a good summary of what your covering letter should say, but it requires a certain amount of thought and consideration. Here are the points you should identify for each section :
You, the recruiter |
- Collect as much information about your potential employer as possible : their sectors of activity, company size, current clients, plans, problems etc... - Find out what kinds of skills are necessary and in demand for the job or the type of job you would like to have. |
Me, the candidate |
|
- Make a list of your specialities, your know-how, your interests and the things which you are enthusiastic about, your aptitudes, qualities, skills, working method etc... - Look for different adjectives and positive words to qualify and describe yourself. |
Us, and our meeting |
|
- Find links, connections, common points between the things you have at your disposal, and the things the recruiters you are writing to are expecting. |
You must then find the way to convince your correspondent of your qualities and your know-how. You cannot simply state you have such-and-such a quality without proving it. You should therefore concentrate on 2 or 3 essential points and use different arguments to back them up.
For each point, make an effort to describe a situation you have experienced (in your professional or personal life) which will justify you mentioning such-and-such a quality or skill.
